GUBBIO - UMBRIA

About Gubbio

Gubbio is a quaint charming town, with lots of things to do for both children and adults. The town gets magic at Christmas time, but there is a great array of exhibitions throughout the year; don’t miss the summer concerts that are usually held in the evocative Roman Theater.

The tourist information section of Gubbio’s website is where to look for the most updated news.

This website shares a lot of information about exhibitions, shows and events in Gubbio.

INFO

Where to Get Useful Information

First of all, I recommend you visiting the Tourism Office, not far from Piazza 40 Martiri (some information is available online too). Here is where you can get some valuable insights into cultural events, attractions and current exhibitions, as well as a map of Gubbio, tickets for the events and brochures of any kind.

Among other things, here you can buy for only 3 € a Turisticard audio guide that will accompany you for an entire day throughout Gubbio explaining, for example, what is the Bargello Fountain and how to take the Fool's License of Gubbio ...

The Full Turisticard (€5) consists of the above-mentioned audio-guide, plus a combined ticket that will allow you to visit all the museums (once) at a reduced price. It also includes discounts for the Gubbio Express train, the City Services, a return ticket for the cable car, plus other discounts in selected shops and restaurants.

Servizio Turistico Associato – Dal lunedì a domenica – 9.00 – 13.00 / 14.00 – 18.00 Via della Repubblica 15 – Telefono: 075 922 0693 – info@iat.gubbio.pg.it

ATTRACTIONS

Colle Eletto Funicular

This nice and short day trip is suitable for everyone: couples, families with children and even dogs. An open “cage” will bring you to the top of Monte Ingino; the route is breathtaking and offers a wonderful view over Gubbio. At the top there are a bar and a restaurant with a view; you can also pay a visit to Basilica di San Ubaldo.

When it’s time to go back to Gubbio, you can either use the cable car again or walk down the 2-kilometer dirt road which leads to the funicular’s car park. It’s a beautiful, easy pathway, but I suggest that you wear suitable and comfortable shoes. For further information, visit www.funiviagubbio.it

Exhibitions, markets and events

Like most Italian cities, Gubbio has its own festivals and markets too.

First of all, you could visit the local weekly market (every Tuesday morning) to buy fresh fruit an vegetable, Pecorino cheese and some delicious porchetta (typical spit-roasted pork from central Italy), as well as clothes, houseware, and much more. For those who has a flair for it, finding some good deals will be a piece of cake! I suggest you going early in the morning, because it gets a bit crowded later and finding a parking spot gets harder.

Local weekly market: every Tuesday in Piazza 40 Martiri, from 8am to 1pm. If there’s a bank holiday on Tuesday, the market is postponed to the following available Sunday. Call Polizia Municipale for further information: +39 075 927 3770.

A big market/exhibition is held in the historic center of Gubbio twice a year; it usually lasts the whole day (8am-8pm approximately):

May 17 – Fiera di Sant’Ubaldo June 24 – Fiera di San Giovanni

You’ll fall in love with the Antiques Market on the third Sunday of each month, while a Local Farmer’s Market is held on the fourth Sunday of each month. They are both located under Logge dei Tiratori, from 9am to 6pm.

Truffle lovers can’t miss the National Exhibition of White Truffle and Agri-food Products(late October/early November every year).

Where to eat

After testing several restaurants, we selected those which we liked the most and we arranged the opportunity for our guests to get a discount between 10% and 20%.

You will just have to say that you’re staying at La Panoramica Gubbio when it’s time to pay the bill. Of course, you can explore and choose a restaurant by yourself instead: Gubbio doesn’t have any 3-star restaurants but neither tourist traps, so it will be a sure hit!

EATING

Osteria del Bottaccione

This old-time tavern is located just outside Gubbio, on the road to Bottaccione Gorge. It’s a rustic place where you can enjoy big portions of the typical cuisine from Gubbio and Umbria. Curious fact: owner and cook Rosita Merli won the 2018 edition of the Italian TV cooking show “Cuochi d’Italia”. While there, you don’t want to miss the delicious Truffle Sauce and the Friccò. Ask Rosita what it is!

The only vegetarian restaurant in Gubbio is so good and original that ends up being a non-vegetarians’ favorite as well! The dishes colorful, fresh and finely presented. This restaurant is strategically located in the heart of Gubbio, not far from the car park in Piazza 40 Martiri. It features a tasteful cuisine, well-presented dishes, a kind and professional service, as well as an outdoor dinner area on the Corso.

You must try thair special truffle menu, let alone the meat-based dishes: the tartare is delicious!

I want to mention their “pizza non pizza”, made with a special, easy-to-digest dough. You either love it or hate it: I love it and I can’t stay away from it too long!

EATING

Il Bargello Ristorante Pizzeria

Located in a historic palace dating back to the XIV century, this restaurant gets particularly charming in summer, when you can enjoy your special candle-lit dinner in the terrace/garden or surrounding the historical Bargello Fountain. While offering a typical cuisine from Umbria and other parts of Italy, it also has themed menus: Truffle Menu, Gubbio Menu, Tasting Menu, New Year’s Day Menu…

Curious fact: this is a traditional, family-managed restaurant, now at its third generation!

La Balestra Ristorante Pizzeria

It’s a historic restaurant/pizza place located in the center of Gubbio and very easy to reach from Piazza 40 Martiri. It boasts a large garden, Medieval halls, a great service, a varied menu and an exceptional wine list.

Their cuisine is typical from Umbria and the whole of Italy, but you can choose special menus at Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Saint Valentine’s Day… It usually opens early for lunch and dinner and is suitable for celiac people too.

EATING

Locanda del Tartufo

Located in the town center, it is a typical restaurant with stone walls and straw chairs.

This is the perfect place to try truffle specialties and local deli meats, served informally on chopping boards; pair them with crescia (a typical kind of focaccia baked on rounded iron slabs), a glass of Umbrian wine or some craft beer from Gubbio.

EATING

120 Grammi Hamburger Factory

Here is an Informal and cheerful diner where you can enjoy burgers made with local ingredients, as well as delicious sauces and a great choice of beers.

Vegetarian and vegan burgers are also available: they’re made with ingredients that are selected among the farms of the area. Their pizza is quite special: made with a high-hydration, long-leavened dough, it is particularly light, crunchy and easy to digest. The place is very easy to reach from the car park in Piazza 40 Martiri.

EATING

Da Fulvio Pizzeria Ristorante

Last but not least: located inside Torre Calzolari, it is outside of Gubbio but it’s really worth it! It’s the place to go for those who love a super thin and crunchy pizza: it’s my favorite one! All the other dishes are equally good, especially the grilled meat. The price-quality ratio is great: everybody loves this place and it’s always quite crowded!

TRANSPORTATION

Convenient car parks

  1. Coming from Viale Parruccini, you’ll reach the last roundabout where an arch opens up in the old walls; drive through it and you’ll be at a large car park: it is free of charge on your left, while you’ll need to use a parking disc for the area on your right-hand side. Use the underground passage to get to the city center.
  2. Again from Viale Parruccini, turn right at the roundabout and find a large paid car-park area in your right-hand side.
  3. Piazza 40 Martiri is a large paid car park: it’s the closest to the city center and you can easily pay with coins, banknotes, credit card or debit card.

Supermarkets

There are several supermarkets in Gubbio, some of them small, dark and rather out of stock. Below are my favorites:

  1. EMI – Via della Piaggiola, 144, 06024 Gubbio PG – Tel. Phone: 075 9220343
It is generally open from 8am to 8pm, sometimes on Sundays too.
It is new, bright and well stocked. I love their bread, but the deli,
the fish and the meat sections are equally good.
  2. Eurospin – Via dell’Arboreto, 06024 Gubbio PG – Tel. 800 595 595
It is generally open from 8am to 8pm, sometimes on Sundays too.
It is the best choice for some cheap grocery shopping. Although there are no famous brands.
you’ll love their deli section and their tasty meat and fish.
  3. Cheese & Deli meat Prodotti Tipici “dal Generale” – Piazza dei Quaranta Martiri, 1 – Tel. 392 844 0109
I recommend this so much! They sell typical Italian products, such as amazing Italian pecorino cheese, but also more unusual Italian or foreign kinds of cheese.
